From the 01/06/2025 the Macquarie Dictionary Online will introduce a number of changes to our individual and business subscriptions to address the needs of our core customers while continuing to provide the most comprehensive, up-to-date Australian Dictionary content online.
For business customers, new subscription tiers will allow you to cover more users, so more team members can access the resource.
For individual customers, these changes mean that you will be offered the choice to subscribe to our new Professional Editor subscription or our new Personal subscription at your next renewal.
We have also launched a new Macquarie Dictionary app range on Android and iOS devices. This update is in response to your requests for greater accessibility anywhere, anytime, making it easier to have the Macquarie Dictionary right at your fingertips.
What’s changing?
- Optimised business subscription tiers: We’ve tailored our subscription options to better suit diverse business sizes allowing administrators to select the best plan for their organisation. From start-ups, small and medium sized businesses to large government organisations, match your needs to the relevant subscription at your next renewal.
- Complimentary Thesaurus access: Unlock enhanced vocabulary tools with all subscriptions now featuring complimentary Thesaurus access for an enriched and comprehensive search experience. Dictionary only subscriptions will be discontinued.
- Streamlining for professional editorial users: We’re introducing a new Professional Editor subscription, designed to better meet editorial business and access needs. This includes additional features like IP whitelisting for the home office so you’ll never need to login again!
- Personal subscriptions for individual users: Access for individual or personal use will now be available under our Personal subscription product. It will include the same useful features such as Wildcard search and Saved Words.
- New app range: Access the dictionary offline and on-the-go on Android and iOS devices.
What do I need to do?
Come renewal time you can subscribe to one of the new Macquarie Dictionary subscriptions that aligns with your needs. Don’t worry, we won’t automatically renew you on a new product: you’ll have the power to make this decision yourself.
Simply login to My Account and select the Manage Subscription button. On the next screen, select Renew Subscription. This will take you to our sign up form. Select the appropriate new product for your subscription type:
– For example, a business or institution now has the option to select a Business subscription that covers a different number of employees.
– Individual freelance editorial and business professionals can subscribe to our new Professional Editor business subscription.
– Dedicated word enthusiasts and avid linguists can subscribe to the Personal subscription.

Individual
The Individual subscription product has been replaced by the new Professional Editor and Personal subscription types. Both new subscription types cost $99.99 for 12 months access.
If you use the Macquarie Dictionary for work as a freelance editor or sole trader, you can subscribe to the new Professional Editor subscription, which introduces a new easy access method to keep you signed in. See the IP address for more detail.
For casual users, such as the many amateur lexicographers who send us words, or crossword lovers, we recommend you sign up for the new Personal subscription. Alternatively, you can explore our updated app range for use on your preferred mobile device.
IP Access
With a shift towards working from home and on the go, editors, freelancers and sole traders need more access options than ever before. As a result we’re extending IP access functionalities to the new Professional Editor subscription users.
IP access allows you to stay automatically logged in to your subscription whenever you visit www.macquariedictionary.com.au. No more logging in multiple times a week.
To activate IP access, you will need to whitelist your IP address to My Account. See the guide on our website for more information.

Business/Institution
Simplified subscription tiers
Whether you are a new SME, restructured government department or a global brand, our new subscription pricing will make it easier for you to match your business size to a subscription tier.
For example, our new Team / Start up tier consolidates three existing tiers and covers up to 10 users, allowing for more flexibility with user numbers for small businesses or teams.
We have also created clearly defined tiers for businesses with over 1000 users to provide more pricing consistency for our larger subscribers.
Pricing
The consolidation of subscription tiers means that some users will notice a decrease in their annual subscription fee while other users will notice an increase. For example, our current Dictionary & Thesaurus for up to 10 users tier costs $267.99 per annum whereas the equivalent tier in the new product range costs $187.00 per annum. Whereas if you have 200-400 users at present, the equivalent tier from 1st June 2025 costs $927.00 per annum but allows access for up to 500 users.
The price for all subscription tiers up to 1000 users will be visible during the sign up process.
Changes to Auto renewal
To assist with managing your subscription, all subscriptions up to 999 users can now enable auto-renewal to manage their annual subscription renewal. Administrators can manage or opt-out of this renewal option through My Account.
Library
Our subscription offering will continue to be based on your library’s active membership numbers, charging you based on the real number of users rather than the potential reach based on your region, and allowing for fluctuations in member numbers.
